You may be able to get the entire thing replaced or repaired under warranty because of the fan. I had a similar problem with a video card I received as a replacement and the manufacturer was more than happy to exchange it again.

i figure by spending the 30 bucks to just permanently fix the problem is worth it, compared to having to constantly send the thing in, i dont think the warrenty is still on it, i've had it for 5 months now, i think Newegg's warenty is only 30 days =\

Newegg does have the option to buy an extended warranty which is what I did on a few recent purchases.

There's always the manufacturer you could ask. :)

AN Epic Tail

Post by UrPeaceKeeper »

The date is Sunday March 6th 2005, UrPeaceKeeper wakes up and turns on his computer, noticing no noise. Curiosity got the best of him and he looked to see what made it so! Quickly he shuts his computer off, rips out his Radeon 9800 Pro and examines closer. He Determines that:

"After 3 months of running almost nonstop its a wonder you sir heatsink fan, are still running"

After removing the heatsink face, he notices yet another strange clue, the fan is offcenter! Proceeding deeper fueled by intense curiosity he removes the fan from its ball berring mount to see a sight that no one wants to see. Three large canyons in his plastic fan holder!

"Alas," he cried "It is done!"

Not knowing what to do next he quickly looks for an easy fix.

"Ahh yes this old 40mm CPU Fan will work nicely, but how to secure it to the radeon!"

Image

Upon furthur investigation, he found the following bonding agents. Duct tape, which he quickly ruled out as too dangerous (duct tape under extreme heat = bad). Super glue, which he concluded would have the same results as duct tape, and Scotch Tape!

"Ahh yes! The scottish foke are intelligent they are! This will work nicely!" He said.

And so our epic tale ends with a 40mm fan scotchtaped to the heatsink of a 9800 pro, preventing disasterous overheating, and working as a good anticatalyst to random XP Reboots!

And they lived Happily Ever After, that is until he checked his wallet.

Sorry for the large pictures, however its the best i can do, the yellow circles mark the 3 fissures in the plastic mount
